What is auto insurance?

What is auto insurance?
Auto insurance provides coverage for the following areas:

Bodily Injury Liability - This covers injuries for which you are responsible due to an auto accident.

Property Damage Liability - This handles the damages to property for which you are responsible due to an auto accident.

Medical Payments -
This provides minimal coverage for medical bills resulting from and auto accident for you and your passengers regardless of who is at fault.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist -  Provides coverage for your medical bills if you are involved in an accident with a driver who is at fault and has either no or not enough insurance to cover all your injuries.

Other Than Collision (sometimes called "Comprehensive") - Covers damage to your vehicle for such things as fire, theft, windstorm, hail, hitting an animal, etc.  Also covers damage to auto glass.

Collision -  Just like it says, covers damage to your vehicle if you collide with another vehicle, tree, ditch, etc.

Optional Coverages - Various coverage including:
  • Rental reimbursement
  • Loan / Lease payoff
  • Towing and labor
  • Replacement cost coverage
  • OEM parts coverage
  • Uninsured motorist property damage
  • Accidental airbag discharge
  • Lock replacement
All information is in general term.  Your specific policy language governs what is and is not covered by your policy.
